SECOND IMPRESSIONS at The New Brewery arts.
Focusing on 8 mature students who returned to study an MA in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking with an interest in redefining the idea of printmaking. Items such as etching and screen printing, 3D prints to enamelling, marquetry using laser cutting techniques, and textiles – all disciplines using printmaking as a starting point or as an integral part of the design.
This was of particular interest to me for a number of reasons. I have attended printmaking workshop with Sue Brown, one of the exhibiting artists and I am also due to attend a paper engineering workshop with another exhibiting artist, Gemma Wright as I thought may offer new ways of working for my own work. Furthermore I knew that Sue Brown has a nostalgic approach to some of her enamel work which I was interested to see for a future project Message and meanings, Exercise making connections.
Under the exhibition title is work by Katie Wallis who screen prints her own fabric for objects such as these. The giant patchwork soft ball I particularly liked.
Jane Sasanow exhibits were screen prints with multi layering of imagery and chine colle, a printing method of applying archival printmaking quality tissue at the same time as printing. This is a slightly different method to the one I know as she appears to have printed onto it and then hand stitched to a screen print. The approached appealed to me very much.
Gemma Wright produced an animation of her cut and folded screen prints and paper engineering behind an installation of her paper sculpture. Quite hypnotic to watch.
